Beach Renourishment
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, completed beach renourishment in the City of North Myrtle Beach in February 2026. Following completion in North Myrtle Beach, the contractor mobilized south to the City of Myrtle Beach to continue the Grand Strand Beach Renourishment Project.
The project began with mobilization in North Myrtle Beach in October 2025 and progressed south along the Grand Strand as planned. Work will continue in Myrtle Beach before concluding in Garden City and Surfside Beach. Please note that the overall project timeline remains subject to change due to weather conditions and equipment delays.
The City of North Myrtle Beach had an overall positive experience working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the project contractors. The project remained on schedule throughout operations in North Myrtle Beach, and the Corps and contractors maintained professional, consistent communication with City staff.
In December 2024, the Charleston District awarded a $72 million contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company to place approximately 2 million cubic yards of sand, equivalent to roughly 200,000 dump trucks, along 26 miles of coastline. This renourishment effort is fully funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is designed to reduce risk to life and infrastructure behind the dunes along the Grand Strand.
Hurricane Ian in September 2022 and Hurricane Debby in August 2024 caused significant erosion along the South Carolina coast, including portions of North Myrtle Beach. The renourishment project is intended to restore storm protection and enhance the resilience of the shoreline and dunes.
During construction, crews progressed approximately 1,000 feet at a time and worked around the clock. While some beach access points were temporarily impacted within active work zones, public beach access remained available at nearby locations.
Residents and visitors can continue to track overall project progress through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' online tracker, which will provide updates on all project areas.
