The Traffic Safety Units mission is to provide safer roadways for our residents and visitors through education and enforcement. Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws to reduce collisions and fatalities, the Traffic Safety Unit will assist all the North Myrtle Beach Police Department divisions to reduce crime and apprehend those who commit them.

History

The North Myrtle Beach Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is a community oriented, problem-solving unit which provides public safety service and traffic enforcement to the citizens and visitors of North Myrtle Beach.  The philosophy of the Traffic Safety Unit is to promote awareness and increase traffic safety through education and enforcement.  The Traffic Safety Unit was established in 2023 and is comprised of one sergeant, two K-9 officers, and four motorcycle officers.

Goals

The Traffic Safety Unit focuses on providing traffic specific enforcement throughout the City of North Myrtle Beach, responding to citizen complaints, as well as working in those areas known to have high occurrences of traffic accidents and/or speeding.  The deployment of speed display signs are effective tools the Unit uses to enhance its ability to not only enforce traffic laws but to also raise awareness amongst the motoring public.

Collision Investigation

The Traffic Safety Unit investigates all traffic collisions within the city limits whether they occur on private property or the public roadways.  The unit investigates approximately 1,657 collisions a year.  The traffic safety unit responds to all serious or fatal collisions within the city limits and will investigate the collision.  All members of the traffic safety unit are certified in collision reconstruction and use the latest technology to investigate these collisions.

Enforcement

The Traffic Safety Unit conducts traffic enforcement with the use of police vehicles and police motorcycles.  The Traffic Safety Unit conducts enforcement in high crash areas and areas where citizen complaints have been received. The Traffic Safety Unit goal is to make the roadways of North Myrtle Beach safer for residents and visitors.

K-9

The Traffic Safety Unit has two K-9 assigned to the unit.  The K-9s are certified in drug detection and tracking. The K-9 units investigate collisions in addition to their K-9 duties.   

Community Oriented Policing

The Traffic Safety Unit takes great pride in being actively involved in the community.  The motor officers yearly teach a motorcycle avoidance/awareness class to citizens and also participate in the Palmetto Police Motorcycle Skills Competition to raise money for Camp Happy Days Add link to camp. The unit’s K-9 officers are active in the Junior K-9 officer program.
