Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful will sponsor the local Beach Sweep/Creek Sweep, which is a part of the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium Statewide Beach Sweep/River Sweep. Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful is a volunteer committee that educates and empowers the North Myrtle Beach community to personally improve the environment and enhance the quality of life and community pride through beautification, litter prevention, and recycling.
The annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep is South Carolina’s largest one-day volunteer cleanup. Every third Saturday in September, thousands of South Carolinians clear the following of aquatic debris:
- Beaches
- Lakes
- Marshes
- Rivers
- Swamps
The cleanup, organized by the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, has taken place annually since 1988. The Sweep takes place in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup, coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy. Once the sweep is over, the Ocean Conservancy tallies all of the debris data. This data helps us learn the sources of the litter so that we can try to prevent litter before it starts.
